VIDEO: Documenting Disaster

Sunday, October 9th, 2005

There was a bomb scare in NYC subways this past week.
Living in Manhattan and riding the subways 4-8 times a day, I wondered what I would do if I was riding the subways and a bomb detonated.
If I wasnt killed, would I record and post it?

It reminded me of 4 years ago when there was no videoblogging.
At that time, I was obsessively taking photos with my digital camera.
I had put down my video camera because I didn’t know where to put the work.
I took thousands of photos that I would print and make books for my friends.

On the morning of 9/11/01, I had just gotten to work downtown.
I was checking my email.
My co-worker, Lucas, came in and said "A fucking plane just hit the World Trade Center".
So my friend, Tori, and I went to go look…
The buildings were on fire.
Like moths, we started walking towards them.
We got about 6 blocks away when the first tower fell.

Anyway, here is a slideshow of 9/10, 9/11, 9/12.
Monday. Tuesday. Wednesday.
If it happens again, of course ill fucking record it.
Now I know where to put the video.

Node101 NYC is now open

Node101intro3

Ryan and I are officially opening Node101 this saturday in Manhattan.
Anyone can come down on saturdays or sunday from 2-5 pm.
You can learn how to videoblog, troubleshooting your videolbog, help us teach, or just hang out.
Bring your laptop and camera…or we’ll have a couple extra for you to use.
WiFi all around.
Please see our Node101 blog for more details.

Node101 is a concept that developed out of our realization that meeting face to face is important.
The vision is to have different nodes throughout the world.
Over the next several months, we’ll be creating a "teacher’s kit" and other resources so anyone could start a node. Though our nodes are run by volunteers out of cheap spaces, we believe each node should have a reliable, published schedule of classes. Sustainability is the key.

Node101 will teach how to videoblog…but also provide a place where people can talk about the world and why they want to start making media in the first place. Especially here in the US, there are so few places public meeting spaces.

There are already nodes in San Antonio and Ojai.

Videoblog Night at Anthology Film Archives

Monday, October 3rd, 2005

We are now doing a regular screening of videoblogs at the Anthology Film Archives.
Almost every wednesday at 6pm.
This is very exciting because its the home to Jonas Mekas…NYC godfather to experimental film and video.

Ryan explains it well on her blog in this video.
So come and represent. Bring your friends.

We’ll be looking for different people to curate the evenings.
All you got to do is send us a list of videos…or send us an hour tape of your favorites. Email me if youre interested. Don’t matter where you live.
