We’re going to India

Saturday, September 30th, 2006

Yep, Ryanne and I got a grant to help make a videoblog for the AirJaldi Summit in Dharamsala.
This is where the Tibetan "government-in-exile" is located, led by the Dalai Lama. The conference is focused on how to "empower communites through wireless networks".

The Tibetans have created a very sophisticated wireless infrastructure using inexpensive/used equipment. The interesting thing is not just that they can communicate with the outside world….but that they can communicate with EACH OTHER over basically a huge intranet. The conference will help spread their experience so other techically-developing societies can use the web effectively.

It’s exciting for me to try to help spread the idea of videoblogging in cultures usually out of the Western conversation. Imagine if the Dalai Lama used a $200 camera to post a video each day to Blip.tv. It’s so simple. The revolution is here…now people just got to find out about it.

A map that is a wiki

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

I’m going to rave about this map:

Markus_map

It’s not just a google map…its a wiki map!

Here’s the story:
Another project we’ve been working on is Sustainable Route.
Ryan’s sister, Ashley, is going on a 4(!) month roadtrip around the US.
She will visit different places that are setting the example of Sustainablity.
She will post a video at each place she visits…hopefully creating a portrait of what Sustainability really looks like in this country. A very smart way to use videoblogging.

A cool part of the story is that much of her trip is being funded by the community through Havemoneywillvlog. (Come up with your own Vlog project…and get it funded.)

During this process, we asked people to suggest places that practiced Sustainability that Ashley could visit on her trip. We got more suggestions than she could ever go visit…so Markus made the cool wiki map . Anyone can add a dot to the map…as well as a link and description of the place. In this way, we can create a snapshot of different places that are practicing sustainability. Go and add a place near your house.

The next step will be to get YOU to go shoot a video at one of the suggestions close to your home.
And then you add this video to the map.
Now things really will become exciting….and a real resource.
A collective video project based around a map that anyone can edit.
Wow.

Help me find Duncan

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

Duncan is a good friend and amazing videoblogger.
His work can be found at 29FragileDays.
For the past couple years, he’s posted little gems on his site that always wow me.
Here’s a cool one:

(WATCH)

Duncan just told me that he has a new videoblog out there, BUT he won’t tell anyone where it is.
He says once I see it, I’ll know it by his style.
So check out his old videos…and let me know if you find Duncan!

UPDATE: The mystery of finding his new videoblog is solved.
Now you got to simply freak out over his work.

I am not making Hats, but I am working

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

For the past 3 months we’ve been doing an experiment in Co-working.
A brainchild of Brad Neuberg and Chris Messina, the idea is to create spaces where freelancers can work together, allow collaboration to occur, and develop a network of Co-working sites that you can visit while travelling around the world.

We are doing our part at the Hat Factory, formerly Teh Space.
Take a video tour….

After some initial chaotic confusion dealing with idealism and money, we finally settled into a workable model for our situation. For $170 a month, you can get keys to the wharehouse loft with full kitchen and bathroom. Or you can drop in for $10 a day. We have 8 "anchors" so far…and going strong. We’re in DogPatch…so come on by. Please call ahead to make sure someone is there: 917 371 6790.

Blogcamp in India

Sunday, September 3rd, 2006

Around San Francisco, I’ve heard little conversations about how India may soon start becoming influencers instead of just being influenced. I have a good friend who actualy moved to India to start his own business. It’s beyond outsourcing. He says there’s a freshness in India that is pretty amazing.

Here’s one piece of evidence of this hypothesis:
Link: BlogCamp.in – Bringing Bloggers Under One Roof
On September 9th and 10th, bloggers will get together in Chennai for all things blogs. Check out their cool video on the front page.

Blogging is more than just a tool for online communication. For
bloggers and blog readers, it represents a way of life where open
communication, dialogue, feedback and collaboration enrich content,
helping us forge professional and personal relationships. From
encouraging government transparency, blogging about children,
discussions on economics, sharing poetry and literature, ribtickling
humour, online activism, movie reviews to Sunday musings, the tool has
changed lives for all those who use it and rely on it for opinion,
information, entertainment and business.

I love that, "ribtickling humor". We need more of that in the US.
They are also adopting the Barcamp.org style to allow for improvisation based on who shows up. They seem to also be very tuned into videoblogging. Wish I could go. Exciting to see the philosophy of the blogging community spread farther out.
