This video is for the folks over here who are debating whether or not to ban people from raising chickens in the city limits of Missoula, Montana. It’s a great conversation, but I feel like the text comments were not being based on reality. So I decided to make a short video with some backyard evidence that raising hens properly is actually a really smart thing to do. This is also NaVloPoMo #15.
Great post. Viva chickens. Nothing more soothing than the low chatter and feather ruffling of hens. Free eggs, free compo and…well, chicken. Sad that so many people are so out of touch. I hope the Missoula antis don’t get their way, I really do.
Very nice, Jay. I do think the chickens were a little noisier when I visited you, but absolutely not enough to be any kind of disturbance. It was very peaceful. Actually a lot less loud than my one local mocking bird, and *way* less noisy that a flock of grackels. The only time a chicken coop would get noisy is if there were a rooster around. My friend Nan has one she found in a park, and brought him home to her chicken coop, named him Lucky. He crowed loudly every time he “got lucky,” about 15 times a day. Eventually Nan sent him away out of courtesy to her neighbors, who did complain about the crowing. But for many of them, that was the first time they realized she’d been keeping birds, although she had kept chickens more than ten years.

very good video and a very interesting theme. I am living in the center and so I think it’s really not possible to do it here, but I suppose that not to far from the center we should find those chickens in some places here in Amsterdam.
